Aotearoa's Wild Card reimagines the Joker playing card with a distinctly New Zealand twist. At its centre stands a Kea—the clever, mischievous alpine parrot—cast as a flute-playing trickster, echoing the Pied Piper. Encircling the Kea are native animals, symbolic of the fragile and often precarious balance of Aotearoa’s unique wildlife. This work explores the tension between playfulness and peril, celebrating the resilience of native species while drawing attention to their vulnerability. The Kea, both guide and wildcard, asks us to consider who leads—and who follows—in the story of survival.
