"Last Card!" is a striking, symbolic painting that reimagines the Queen of Hearts playing card to explore themes of extinction, power, and guardianship. The Queen’s face is a female Huia, the King a male Huia—an extinct native bird once revered in Aotearoa. Fantails accompany them, symbols of transition and spirit. The Queen holds a Kauri seedling, the King holds a Pohutukawa bloom—icons of resilience and remembrance. Centered is a bowler hat crossed with a gun, referencing colonial forces and the Huia’s tragic demise. A poignant reflection on loss, survival, and what remains sacred in the natural world.
