Frog Rock, Weka Pass

This majestic limestone formation sits beside State highway 7 in the Weka Pass in the South Island between the small country towns of Waipara and Waikari. It is an Iconic landmark within New Zealand.
I am lucky enough to live in Waikari and I drive past this epic formation most weeks. I chose to paint the "Frog" from a different perspective, I am almost beneath it where the scale of it intensifies. I love the way the light hits the limestone and highlights the contours, cracks and crevices, It gives depth to the tones and colours .You can see the details made from thousands of years of seasonal weather.
I really enjoyed the many hours painting this outcrop especially when it came time to refine the values and details of the chips and cracks in the rocks, right down to the swaying grass surrounding it.
I continued the painting around the sides of this deep edged canvas to give a more 3 dimensional feel to it.
I truly believe I have captured the essence of this Iconic landmark. What do you think ?
Anyone traveling from Lewis Pass and Hamner back towards Christchurch will view this beauty in all its glory. Or if you aren't able to make the trip to see the Mighty "Frog" in Weka Pass this painting would happily bring the "Frog" to you. It would bring strength and grounding to anywhere it was displayed.
Long may "Frog Rock" continue to watch over the many weary travellers on their way to their destinations.
